If you have not heard of scholar
Rodney Stark, you should take the trouble to find out about him. His
latest book, just published is, The Victory of Reason: How
Christianity Led to Freedom, Capitalism and Western Success. You
can read World Magazine's interview with him about the book here
and find out why it is considered a
"useful corrective for folks in Austin,
Boston, and other blue spots who think of Christianity and rationalism as opposite historical forces and philosophical concepts."
For some reviews of the book see
here. For information about two of his previous books that
incorporate Christianity into the history of the West in a way that
challenges fashion, see The
Rise of Christianity: How the Obscure, Marginal Jesus Movement Became
the Dominant Religious Force
and For
the Glory of God: How Monotheism Led to Reformations, Science,
Witch-Hunts, and the End of Slavery.

Peggy Noonan has a piece in today's Wall
Street Journal about illegal immigrants that questions those elites
who insist on looking at this issue as only an economic one.
Again: What does it mean when your first act is to break the laws of your new country? What does it mean when you know you are implicitly supported in lawbreaking by that nation's ruling elite? What does it mean when you know your new country doesn't even enforce its own laws? What does it mean when you don't even have to become an American once you join America? It is well worth it to read the whole thing. |
